Day 2

Day 2 was a layover day and one for fishing and hiking down river to see the falls. Glen Aulin is situated on a large pool with White Cascade dropping into the pool. Conness Creek also feeds into the pool where you cross two foot bridges to enter the camp. The Pacific Crest Trail heads up the Conness Creek area and the trail down canyon climbs up a short hill before starting the descent into the canyon below. The short hill offers a beautiful view of the river and canyon below as wells as the canyon above, including the White Cascade and Tuolumne Falls. However it is a bit of a drop into the first canyon below and Sue was a little apprehensive about going downhill again so soon on her right knee. So we decided then to use Day 2 as a true layover and hang around the camp. That turned out to be the best idea.

We had breakfast in the morning and then switched camps in the first section as the camp started to clear out. Except for one other spot in our section all of the other sites were empty by 9, so we had our pick of sites. After breakfast we headed out to check out the canyon below, and then turned around to fish the pool as White Cascade and loaf around the camp. Glen Aulin High Sierra Camp has about 10 cabins for guests, a few residences for the crew and the main dining lodge/store. It also has a nice fire ring in the middle of the camp with several benches around the ring. The benches were nice to sit on and have an actual backrest! You never know how nice it is until you have only rocks and logs to sit on!

Fishing in the pool was nice. Allyn caught about 5 to 6 fish in the pool, mostly brookies and rainbows, while Sue sat and looked at the wild flowers and took pictures with her new camera. While Allyn was fishing a girl who was staying at the camp took a swim in the waters. Not sure how cold the water was temperature wise, but it was cold to the touch. Quite daring for sure! After the fish, we walked around the High Sierra Camp and sat in the benches some more!

We headed back to camp and started to cook up lunch just when the bear came around. No visit during the night so lunch must have been his choice of meals for today. Just when we had everything out we had to pack it right back up. At least we hadn't actually cooked anything yet! The bear was small in size but still a bear and it just wandered around the the camp looking for food. It laid down about 50 to 60 feet from our camp until we were all able to shoo it away. He finally took off after some coaxing by some of the regulars and we were able to finish lunch.

After lunch Allyn fished a little bit more on Conness Creek and caught about 10 to 12 brookies. Not too big but still some nice looking fish. After that we headed up camp to check out the sites in the third section and while they were very nice, they were still uphill (even on the second day!) and a little too far from the toilets and water. Our site worked out very nice. We headed back to our site and Sue read a bit on a special tree stump she found (it had a backrest!) while Allyn started fixing cocktails! Dinner was Thai curry rice with some peanut butter on tortillas and again some chocolate cheesecake for desert. The chocolate cheesecake is really nice and tastes great on the trail. It has some chocolate graham cracker crumbs that you spread on the top while it sets up! It would probably taste nice at home as well! After dinner we headed over to the vista point above the river and watched the sunset. With all the smoke from the fires and the clouds hanging around from the T-storms it was a nice view. We finished up with our after dinner drink of hot cider and brandy and hit the sack. The weather held up nice and no rains from the T-storms to speak of on Day 2.
